You can get a great rate through the name your own price feature on priceline. You're guarenteed to get one of the major rental places at the airport.
Start around the $10 range. I've had success solidifying rentals for as low as $13/day on the weekend.

Renting for the 6 weekends may be the best idea. Enterprise has great deals on the weekends. Most of their cars rent during the week and sit in the lot on the weekend. You can haggle with these guys. You may be able to get a nice car, for pennies on a dollar in your situation. My son worked for them ,for several years. He always said that the best deals were over the weekend. Give it a try.
